Ashley Nissenberg Joffe's Patient Story Ft. Zoe Saldaña
Tonight, Stand Up To Cancer® (SU2C) brought together the music world and cancer research in a moving televised fundraising event from the heart of Music City. Hosted by Grammy® Award winner Sheryl Crow, the program spotlighted stories of progress and hope in the fight against cancer, highlighting the real-world impact of SU2C-funded discoveries and the power of collaboration in accelerating breakthrough research. Taped at The Pinnacle in downtown Nashville, the event paid tribute to the city’s spirit of storytelling in unity with SU2C’s mission.
The evening included one-of-a-kind musical collaborations, along with special taped appearances from Kevin Bacon, Jamie Foxx, Tim McGraw, Zoe Saldaña, Reese Witherspoon and Keith Urban. Zoe shared a moving story about a breast cancer patient, Ashley Nissenberg Joffe, and spoke about the importance of cancer screenings. She also stood up for her nephew, Eli, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Together, these moments, and many more, underscored the critical need to fund life-saving cancer research. Performances included:
- “Beautiful Day” by Jonas Brothers and Dan + Shay
- “Believe for It” by CeCe Winans, Gavin DeGraw and The Nashville Community Gospel Choir
- “Hero in Our House” by Gavin DeGraw and Noah Cyrus, a song DeGraw wrote to pay homage to his mother who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2017
- “Live Forever” by Jon Pardi, Marcus King, and Brothers Osborne
- “Lean on Me” by Sheryl Crow, Noah Cyrus and The Nashville Community Gospel Choir
- “I Can’t Lose” by Jonas Brothers, their latest song dedicated to those who are fighting cancer and those who support them
- “Hard Fought Hallelujah” by Jelly Roll and Marcus King
Throughout the hour-long show:
- Audiences heard from TJ and John Osborne of the Brothers Osborne who thanked Stand Up To Cancer-funded researchers, doctors, and front-line workers, and announced that as of March, their father, who was sitting in the audience, was completely cancer free.
- Viewers were reminded about the importance of early detection, as both Sheryl Crow and SU2C Co-founder Katie Couric shared that they are both now cancer free thanks to annual mammograms catching their breast cancer early.
- SU2C-funded researchers spoke about the many reasons they are working tirelessly to improve cancer treatments and how AI is poised to be a game changer in cancer research. It is already helping to analyze images, uncover patterns, and draw insights beyond the capability of the human eye and brain, with the potential to transform both prevention and treatment.
- Cancer survivor Dan Tukey shared that, after losing his brother to liver cancer and his mother’s own cancer diagnosis, genetic screening and groundbreaking clinical trials, like those funded by SU2C, are the reason he is alive today. Kelly Spill, diagnosed at age 28 with Stage 3 colorectal cancer, credited the SU2C Colorectal Cancer Dream Team’s immunotherapy clinical trial with saving her life.
Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming nearly 1,700 lives each day. In 2025, more than 2 million people in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with cancer — about 5,500 each day, or over 200 every hour — underscoring the urgent need to advance research and save lives.
“Tonight was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we come together with one shared goal, to end cancer,” said Katie Couric, SU2C co-founder. “We heard stories of hope, saw the progress that research is making right now, and felt the compassion and generosity of people from all walks of life. There’s still so much work ahead, but every donation, every action, brings us closer to a future where more people survive and thrive after a cancer diagnosis.”
