Charley Pride enjoyed one of the most remarkable careers in country music, breaking color barriers as the genre’s first Black superstar and selling tens of millions of records worldwide. Over more than five decades, he delivered 36 No. 1 hits, including the million-selling crossover classic “Kiss An Angel Good Morning,” and earned three Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and the CMA’s Entertainer of the Year and Top Male Vocalist honors in the early 1970s. A proud member of the Grand Ole Opry, Pride toured across the United States and around the globe, captivating audiences for generations.
Pride’s legacy continued to shine after his passing in 2020. He received the Crossroads of American Music Award in 2019 and the CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020. In recent years, the Ryman Auditorium added a statue in his honor (2023), “Kiss An Angel Good Morning” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (2024), and long-lost 1980s Brook Benton tribute sessions discovered in his Dallas studio were restored and released as Endlessly: A Tribute to Brook Benton in 2025.
