Speaking Truth to Power: A Sojourner Truth Living History Experience
Speaking Truth to Power: A Sojourner Truth Living History Experience
On August 18, 1920, Tennessee made history as the final state needed to ratify the 19th Amendment, securing women the right to vote across the United States.
Join us at the Hermitage for a powerful living history performance as Daisy Century brings Sojourner Truth to life. Born into slavery and later a courageous advocate for abolition and women's rights, Truth traveled widely sharing her story and challenging injustice, famously asking, "Ain't I a Woman?" Her speeches and activism helped shape the fight for equality and continue to inspire generations.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the Saving Old Hickory's Hermitage exhibition, highlighting the women of the Ladies' Hermitage Association who preserved Andrew Jackson's home.
This engaging program invites audiences of all ages to reflect on the courage, determination, and leadership of those who fought for justice and the enduring legacy of women who made their voices heard.
