Pianist Isaiah Cross, a New Haven, Connecticut native now based in Nashville, is an emerging voice on the city's jazz scene and a student at Vanderbilt University. With a style that blends a deep respect for the jazz tradition with a refined, lyrical touch, Cross creates music that is both intimate and dynamic.
This performance marks the debut of Sketches, a new ensemble concept built around the idea that each musician brings a distinct voice to the music, contributing to a larger and fully realized artistic picture. Inspired by the conversational interplay of legendary piano trios led by Brad Mehldau, Keith Jarrett, and Ahmad Jamal, Cross is joined by bassist Lucas Giordano and drummer Will Stenberg, fellow Vanderbilt musicians whose collective chemistry shapes a sound that is both nuanced and adventurous.
Together, the trio explores jazz standards alongside contemporary repertoire, balancing thoughtful interpretation, spontaneous interaction, and modern expression.
