Juneteenth with Nashville

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed – over two years after President Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Also called Freedom Day and Jubilee Day, Juneteenth is a celebration of African American history, culture, and the abiding spirit of community.
