Honoring Our Heroes
Memorial Day is the perfect time to honor our past, and Nashville has a wealth of places to visit all within walking distance of Broadway. Start your journey at the Tennessee State Capitol, holding two statues of early heroes from Nashville. The two statues are: Andrew Jackson, our nation’s 7th president, and Sgt. Alvin C. York, a hero during WWI - both of which called Tennessee home. Located at the Capitol is the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, a 19-acre park that contains a WWII Memorial for visitors to enjoy. Next, head to the War Memorial Auditorium which was built as a tribute to the many Tennesseans who died during WWI. The plaza of War Memorial Auditorium has two sculptures that pay honor to those lost during the Vietnam War and the Korean War. Inside the War Memorial Building is the Military History Branch of the Tennessee State Museum. Exhibits deal with America's overseas conflicts, beginning with the Spanish-American War in 1898 and ending with World War II in 1945.

Dive deep into Nashville's history at any of our historical sites. Explore Fort Negley the largest inland fort built in the United States during the Civil War. Travel to The Battle of Franklin Trust to discover the Carter House, and Carnton Plantation who each played a significant role during the Civil War. Immerse yourself in the past at Historic Travellers Rest Plantation the home of John Overton, one of Nashville's first political leaders. The Belle Meade Plantation is a 19th century historic Greek Revival mansion commissioned by John Harding in 1845 offering tours daily. Then listen to the fascinating story of Andrew Jackson's triumph against the British at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 at Andrew Jackson's Hermitage: Home of the People's President.
