Art After Hours

The Nashville Association of Art Dealers is launching a new monthly arts event on June 4. On the first Thursday of each month, participating galleries (see below) will stay open late from 5-7pm, inviting the public to come and enjoy art after work.

Come out after work and experience the burgeoning arts scene in Nashville.

Participating galleries for the inaugural Art After Hours include Bennett Galleries, Cumberland Gallery, Estel Gallery, Finer Things Gallery, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Gallery One, HA Gallery at Hanging Around, Hiram Van Gordon Memorial Gallery at Tennessee State University, LeQuire Gallery, Local Color Gallery, Midtown Gallery, Richland Fine Art, Rymer Gallery, The Arts Company, Tinney Contemporary and Zeitgeist Gallery.

Highlights of exhibitions and special activities for the June 4th Art After Hours:

Lequire Gallery – This West Nashville gallery presents “As Artists See Us: The Contemporary Portrait,” an exhibition focusing on portraiture from the artist’s perspective and featuring artists Joshua Bronaugh, Murat Kaboulov, Alan Lequire, Jammie Williams and Brody Vincent. Capturing a likeness – a painted or sculpted resemblance created from a model – is the traditional definition of a portrait, but the artists in this exhibit find new ways to depict the human form. Their unique styles challenge the imagination and compel the viewer to consider the “eye of the beholder.” Insight into personality may be found through symbolism embedded in the work and movement may be sensed through posture. During “Art After Hours,” Jammie Williams will be drawing from life in conte crayon and guests will see the progression of a portrait drawing. Lequire Gallery will offer special rates for portrait commissions booked on June 4th.

The Arts Company – The Arts Company on 5th Avenue will preview its popular annual show featuring the colorful works of Brother Mel Meyer, a Marianist monk who has been creating artwork in a variety of media for 50 years – including work in acrylics, metal, hand-made paper, stone, glass and watercolor. The prolific Brother Mel, a native of St. Louis, returns for his 11th Annual Artistic Pilgrimage to The Arts Company where he will showcase new paintings and sculpture. During “Art After Hours,” The Arts Company will host Brother Mel and preview a new book -- “Brother Mel: A Lifetime of Making Art” -- chronicling the art and life of Brother Mel as he celebrates his 81st birthday.

Gallery One – The vibrant landscapes of Vermont painter Henry Isaacs will be on view at Gallery One June 4th. Isaacs, who has been painting plein air landscape across the globe for 30 years, earned degrees in printmaking from the Slade School and in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. He has received numerous honors for his bold, impressionistic works, including honors from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, The Boston Globe Foundation, Hitachi Foundation and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts – The Frist Center for the Visual Arts keeps its doors open each Thursday until 9:00 p.m., with live music available free of charge from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Grand Lobby. Performing during “Art After Hours” on June 4th is musician Tommy Keenum. With purchase of gallery admission, the Frist will feature a gallery talk at 7:00 p.m. on June 4th on Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts, Projects, Buildings, an exhibition of sketches, architectural plans, and models of the world’s leading museum buildings. Trinita Kennedy, associate curator at the Frist Center, will lead a tour of the exhibition. Medieval Treasures from the Cleveland Museum of Art is featured in the Ingram Gallery and Mike Hoolboom: Imitations of Life is featured in the Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery.
