STEEL BARREL BREWERY’S HOP SPRINGS COMPLEX BREAKS GROUND IN MURFREESBORO
Team Behind Mantra Artisan Ales Reveals Plans for the 80+ Acre Agritourism Destination Scheduled to Open in Late 2017
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (June 15, 2017) – Life Is Brewing, LLC—the team behind Mantra Artisan Ales and the recently launched Steel Barrel Brewery—has broken ground on Hop Springs at 6790 John Bragg Highway in the heart of Murfreesboro, Tenn. A one-of-a-kind agritourism destination, Hop Springs is set on 80+ acres on which Steel Barrel Brewery’s main brewing facility and taproom will be housed. Scheduled to be complete in late 2017, the first phase of Hop Springs will include a 2,000-seat amphitheater, a 10-acre hop field, wet and dry dog parks and scenic hiking and biking trails.
In a partnership with Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), Hop Springs will also be home to a fermentation lab to be used by the MTSU Fermentation Science program. MTSU was granted legislation by the state that allows the university to permit students to do lab work at neighboring Steel Barrel’s brewing facility. Available for enrollment in fall of 2017, the MTSU Fermentation Science program is only the second certified program of its kind in the nation.
Life Is Brewing, LLC, established in early 2017, is the dynamic team behind Mantra Artisan Ales and the newly established Steel Barrel Brewery. Founding partners include Maneet Chauhan and her husband Vivek Deora, as well as CEO Mark Jones and Brewmaster Derrick Morse.
“Our team is excited to open Hop Springs in late 2017,” says Jones. “The farm will be home to Steel Barrel Brewery, along with MTSU fermentation and sensory labs. Our collaboration with the university will broaden job opportunities and placement for graduates. As an added benefit, our staff and MTSU faculty will be working on new ideas in agricultural products, marketing analysis (in the sensory lab) and new fermentation and brewing processes.
“Hop Springs has 83 rolling acres that are a blank canvas awaiting the energy of our staff and collaborating partners to execute plans that will benefit us all. We are looking forward to a fruitful future with the community as well as the university.”
“The collaboration between Steel Barrel Brewery and MTSU is critical for the new Fermentation Science degree program,” says Dr. Tony Johnston, director of the MTSU Fermentation Science program. “It represents the commitment MTSU has to serve the industries our graduates may enter upon graduation as well as the willingness and interest Steel Barrel Brewery has in ensuring our students receive real world experience in the brewing industry. I hope other Tennessee-based companies that use fermentation to create their end products reach out to and partner with us as we create the best possible Fermentation Science educational program possible.”
Middle Tennessee’s newest craft brewery, Steel Barrel Brewery recently introduced its first line of craft beers earlier this year that are now available in various restaurants, bars and retailers throughout Murfreesboro and across the state. Once complete, Steel Barrel Brewery at Hop Springs will be Tennessee’s largest craft brewery and second largest brewery.
Phase two of Hop Springs, which is set to begin in spring 2018, will include lodging as well as a multi-purpose event venue with further details to be announced.
