"We look for cities with a certain “wow” factor that makes bearding champions want to visit but will also make them feel right at home with their outrageous facial hair," said event producer Aaron Switzer. "Coming off a fantastic time in Brooklyn in 2015, Nashville fit the bill for this year’s championships. The city is booming with on-trend beards and everyone is excited about the competition being in Music City."
Judges will determine winners by voting on whose facial hair best enhances their overall appearance, style and personality. In the freestyle categories, judges also consider originality and creativity. Visit www.nationalbeardchampionships.com for more details.
Some of the most notable beards in the competition are MJ Johnson, also known as “Razor Hater” and 3-Time National Champion Imperial Partial Beard. Johnson is also the official 2016 event spokesperson. Owen Hicks, National Champion in the Garibaldi category, and Nashville resident will return to represent his hometown and defend his title. Nate Johnson, 2-Time National Champion in Sideburns will lead the event as emcee.
"Becoming a Spokesperson for The National Beard and Moustache Championships is like a cross between becoming 'The Director of Growing Operations' at a Fortune 500 company, winning a beauty pageant, and taking top honors at a lumberjack battle,” said Johnson. “The fact that it's in Nashville and in particular The Ryman adds an element of goose bumps and nostalgia whenever I think about competing on that stage. It's amazing."
As the Championship’s official beneficiary, the Tennessee Wildlife Federation’s Hunters for the Hungry program will receive $5,000. The Tennessee Wildlife Federation is one of the largest and oldest organizations in Tennessee, dedicated to the conservation of the state’s wildlife and natural resources through stewardship, youth engagement, and public policy.
2016 Just For Men® National Beard & Moustache Championships® is sponsored by Billy Jealousy, Sugarland Distillery, Traveler Beer and Captain Fawcett.
