Nashville, TN - Nashville Children’s Theatre (NCT), the nation’s oldest professional theatre for young audiences reaches the midway point of its 2017-18 season with THE SNOWY DAY & OTHER STORIES BY EZRA JACK KEATS. This musical play includes four Ezra Jack Keats books: Whistle for Willie, Goggles!, A Letter to Amy, and the groundbreaking Caldecott Winner The Snowy Day. The show runs from January 18 – February 11, 2018.
"As a child, The Snowy Day held a particular fascination for me as a Florida girl,” says director Alicia Lark Fuss. “I couldn’t play in the snow as Peter did, but Keats’ book transported me to a world where the ground crunched underfoot and beautiful white stuff could be scooped up and shaped. NCT’s incredible designers and performers have brought a true spirit of curiosity, wonder, and respect for young people to their work, of which I believe Keats would approve.”
About THE SNOWY DAY & OTHER STORIES BY EZRA JACK KEATS
Follow Peter and his friends as they romp and play, starting snowball fights and making snow angels in this imaginative ode to childhood joys and the challenges of growing up. Packed with humor and fun, this production mixes wonderfully innovative shadow puppetry and live action to celebrate Keats’ treasured characters.
“One of the things Alicia and I put a lot of work into was figuring out what in the play is shadow puppets and what is real,” says shadow puppet designer Karly Bergmann. “The script itself is vague about this, and gives more clues than it does directions on shadow puppets. The audience can expect to see some of the most iconic illustrations from the books interpreted as shadow puppet moments, as well as some of the other moments in the play that are the most fantastical, dreamy, or otherwise impossible to show.”
THE SNOWY DAY & OTHER STORIES BY EZRA JACK KEATS is adapted for the stage by Jerome Hairston and based on the books by Ezra Jack Keats. The show runs from January 18 – February 11, 2018 at NCT.
The cast includes Tamiko Robinson Steele, DéYonté Jenkins, and Elvie Williams.
Scenic and lighting design is by NCT’s resident lighting designer Scott Leathers, costume design by NCT’s resident costume designer Patricia Taber, and shadow puppet design by Karly Bergmann. Multi-media and sound design is by Colin Peterson, with musical direction by Shawn Knight. Alicia Lark Fuss will direct.
Opening night is Thursday, January 18 at 6:30 pm. Weekend performances are at 2pm, Saturday, January 20 – Sunday, February 11. (No performance on Sunday, January 21.)
