HOW IT WORKS:

The Music City Specialty License Plate (seen above) is being approved in the state legislature in the 2009 session. The State of Tennessee requires a presale of 1,000 license plates within a year at a price of $36 each. By June 2010, the NCVB will present to the State its 1,000+ individual names of Music City Specialty License Plate purchasers. Upon validation, Tennessee will begin printing the new license plates and will distribute to appropriate DMVs in purchaser counties. You will be notified when your new license plate is ready to be picked up. Please note: traditional tag fees still apply upon pickup of your new license plate at the DMV.

QUESTIONS?

  • Why do I pay the $36 now?
The state requires the minimum presale of 1,000 license plates showing sufficient support in order to justify the production cost.
  • Why is the cost $36? It has always been $35 for a specialty plate?
There is legislation in the General Assembly that will increase the specialty plate fee from $35 to $36.
  • How will the number on my plate be assigned?
Numbers will be assigned randomly, based on when applications are received.
  • Can I get a vanity printing on my specialty plate?
Vanity printing - designating special names, symbols, messages on license plates - can be secured on your specialty plate and is subject to the same additional costs you would normally pay for a vanity plate. Please contact the NCVB if you're requesting a vanity printing.
  • What is the extra $36 used for?
The State of Tennessee allows specialty plates to be utilized by non-profit organizations for fundraising purposes. Approximately half of the $36 fee will serve as a fundraiser for Music City Inc., the NCVB foundation. The remaining money goes to the State for the cost of printing and administering the plate.
  • Can I purchase the plate if I don't live in Nashville?
The plate can be purchased by anyone who has a valid driver's license in the state of Tennessee.
  • What if I move before I the plate is printed?
Please notify the NCVB (contact info below) of your new address, including county. If you move out of state, your $36 will be reimbursed to you.
  • What if the NCVB does not pre-sell the required 1,000 plates?
The NCVB will refund 100% of funds collected if it does not pre-sell the minimum 1,000 plates.
